Sharjah’s Rain Room, the first of its kind in the Middle East, is an immersive art installation by Random International that invites guests to walk through a downpour of continuous rain without getting wet. Designed by the Sharjah Art Foundation and UAE-based SpaceContinuum Design Studio in collaboration with Space Architecture Practice + Research, Sharjah; this jaw-dropping masterpiece isn’t just for art lovers, but for all those who are fascinated by the advancements in technology. It’s permanently nestled at Al Majarrah, Sharjah.
Sharjah’s rain room features a highly responsive environment that adapts as visitors walk through the darkened underground space, keeping them dry as the rain falls above any detectable human presence – imagine walking under a beautiful continuous downpour without getting wet! Since opening its doors in May 2018, the art exhibit has been making it rain with beauty, and displays a remarkable blend of art and technology.
The rain room, a site-specific installation, harnesses 2,500 liters of self-cleaning recycled water controlled by a system of networked 3D tracking cameras to create its stunning and mesmerizing exhibition. As an art exhibit that seeks to explore how human connections to nature and one another are mediated through intangible technologies, the rain room is part of the Sharjah Art Foundation’s first of a series of permanent spaces designed by artists. It creates an unparalleled experience for all visitors.
Random International, an art group founded in 2005, is based in Berlin and London. They have a diverse portfolio ranging from performance to sculpture and large-scale art installation. Their works seek to explore the human condition in a world that’s becoming increasingly mechanized. The rain room is Random International’s Middle East premiere and first permanent installation of this project.
Rain Room Sharjah - Timings
The rain room is located opposite Lulu Hypermarket, Al Majarra. It’s open all year long, but it’s best to plan before visiting. Also, opening times vary with seasons, especially during Ramadan.
Opens:
- Saturday to Thursday — 9am to 9pm
- Friday — 4pm to 10pm
Timing during Ramadan:
- Saturday to Thursday — 10am to 3pm, 9pm to 12am
- Friday — 9pm to 12am
